What is Spiritual Awakening? My Personal Journey Beyond the Mind
What Does "Spiritual Awakening" Really Mean?
You’ve likely searched for this on Google or asked AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini. They provide accurate definitions that satisfy the intellect, yet a sense of ambiguity often remains.
That’s perfectly natural. AI can synthesize thousands of sources into a definition, but it operates within the realm of logic and ego. Awakening, however, is exactly what happens when we step outside of the ego.
Think of it this way: We all have an "inner ego" fueled by a constant stream of thoughts - what Zen masters often call the "monkey mind." Most of the time, we are so lost in these thoughts that we mistake them for who we are.
Awakening is the moment the "monkey" stops. It occurs when the mind falls silent, and you realize you are the one observing the thoughts, not the thoughts themselves. It is a state of pure presence and profound relaxation.
My "Glimpses" of Awakening: Personal Stories
Understanding the concept of mindfulness is one thing; experiencing it is another. You can read every book by Thich Nhat Hanh or Eckhart Tolle, but until you feel it, the words are just "fingers pointing at the moon." The finger is not the moon; you have to look where it’s pointing.
2016: The Moment the World Turned Vivid
Years ago, shortly after graduating, I was riding my bike through the busy streets of Saigon. At the time, I knew nothing about spirituality. My head was "100% full of noise." Because I was so lost in thought, I wasn't paying attention and ended up in a minor fender bender at a yellow light.
I got back on my bike and kept riding, but 15 minutes later, something shifted.
The fear I usually felt - especially my social anxiety - vanished. I pulled into a repair shop and started chatting with the mechanic as if we were old friends. I was seeing the world as it truly is, without the filter of my ego.
Presence in the Ordinary
Since then, my spiritual journey has deepened. I’ve realized that awakening often arrives unannounced when the mind takes a back seat:
-
Parenting: While rocking my daughter to sleep in 2019, a wave of pure presence hit me. I whispered to myself, "Wait, is happiness really this simple?"
-
Housework: I’ve felt it while dusting my plants - suddenly seeing the life and connection between us. Even doing the laundry became a meditative experience. The scent of the soap, the rhythm of the water, the texture of the fabric - everything felt real, vivid, and "here."
How Can You Live More Mindfully?
In a way, asking "how" is a trick of the mind. If we try too hard to be awakened, we are using the ego - the very thing we are trying to transcend. However, the urge to ask is a vital part of the journey.
Based on my experience, here are a few "fingers pointing at the moon" to guide your way:
• Curate Your Library: Dive into authors who explore the inner world. I highly recommend Eckhart Tolle (The Power of Now), Thich Nhat Hanh, Osho, or Jiddu Krishnamurti.
• Mindful Content: Seek out teachers who resonate with you. Many find peace through the teachings of Sadhguru or contemporary mindfulness speakers on YouTube.
• Practice Presence: You don't need a mountain retreat. Practice observing your mind during daily chores. I find that journaling - writing down those "inner voices" - helps me detach from them and find clarity.
Final Thoughts
At its core, spiritual awakening is simply living fully in the "Now," free from the ego's grip. It is a concept until it becomes your reality - and I promise, the "taste" of that presence is sweeter than anything the mind can imagine.
I’d love to hear about your journey.
